Greetings to all Authors on World Book Day <br />
_______________________________________________ <br />
<br />
About the Day<br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
23 April is a symbolic date for world literature for on this date in 1616, <b>Cervantes</b>, <b>Shakespeare</b> and <b>Inca Garcilaso de la Vega</b> all died. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as <b>Maurice Druon</b>, <b>Haldor K.Laxness</b>, <b>Vladimir Nabokov</b>, <b>Josep Pla</b> and <b>Manuel Mejía Vallejo</b>. </div><div> <br />
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. In this respect, UNESCO created both the World Book and Copyright Day and the UNESCO Prize for Children's and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance. </div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.un.org/Depts/dhl/book/index.html">http://www.un.org/Depts/dhl/book/index.html</a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The success of the World Book and Copyright Day will depend primarily on the support received from all parties concerned (authors, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions, humanitarian NGOs and the mass media).</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
They are mobilized in each country by UNESCO National Commissions, UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations, Associated Schools and Libraries, and by all those who feel motivated to work together in this world celebration of books and authors. </div>
<div>

Celebrate World Book Day with The Literacy Project - Google's Participation<br />

<div>
</div>
<div>
At the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), an educational nonprofit near Boston, we have spent the past two decades working to leverage the potential of personal, digital technologies to customize educational media to meet individual needs. In celebration of World Book Day, CAST has created a powerful new tool, UDL Editions, that showcases how classic and sometimes difficult texts—such as Shakespeare’s 18th Sonnet and Jack London’s Call of the Wild—can be rendered in smart, reader-friendly ways to provide a whole host of learning supports—such as multimedia glossaries, chapter summaries, and read-aloud features, links to Google Maps to place settings in contemporary contexts.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The books are one of the many projects being featured starting today on The Literacy Project, a joint effort by Google, LitCam, and UNESCO’s Institute for Lifelong Learning. The project encourages literacy and reading organisations from around the globe to connect and share materials and best practice—from a searchable maps database to e-learning tools—like PlanetRead’s same-language subtitling videos—that can be used in the classroom.</div>

World Health Day 2017 Depression: Let's talk</h2>
<br />
Depression affects people of all ages, from all walks of life, in all countries. It causes mental anguish and impacts on people’s ability to carry out even the simplest everyday tasks, with sometimes devastating consequences for relationships with family and friends and the ability to earn a living. At worst, depression can lead to suicide, now the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year olds.<br />
<br />
Yet, depression can be prevented and treated. A better understanding of what depression is, and how it can be prevented and treated, will help more sufferers to seek help and encourage others to persuade them to seek help.<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
What is depression?</h3>
<br />
<b>Depression is an illness </b>characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks. In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following symptoms: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less; anxiety; reduced concentration; indecisiveness; restlessness; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.<br />

<h2>
World Health Day 2015 Theme - Foodborne Illnesses</h2>
<br />
New data on the harm caused by foodborne illnesses underscore the global threats posed by unsafe foods, and the need for coordinated, cross-border action across the entire food supply chain. World Health Day will be celebrated on 7 April, with WHO highlighting the challenges and opportunities associated with food safety under the slogan "From farm to plate, make food safe."<br />
<br />
On 2nd April 2015, WHO is issuing the first findings from what is a broader ongoing analysis of the global burden of foodborne diseases. The full results of this research, being undertaken by WHO’s Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG), are expected to be released in October 2015.<br />
<br />
Some important results are related to enteric infections caused by viruses, bacteria and protozoa that enter the body by ingestion of contaminated food. The initial FERG figures, from 2010, show that:<br />
<br />
there were an estimated 582 million cases of 22 different foodborne enteric diseases and 351 000 associated deaths;<br />
the enteric disease agents responsible for most deaths were Salmonella Typhi (52 000 deaths), enteropathogenic E. coli (37 000) and norovirus (35 000);<br />
the African region recorded the highest disease burden for enteric foodborne disease, followed by South-East Asia;<br />
over 40% people suffering from enteric diseases caused by contaminated food were children aged under 5 years.<br />
Unsafe food also poses major economic risks, especially in a globalized world. Germany’s 2011 E.coli outbreak reportedly caused US$ 1.3 billion in losses for farmers and industries and US$ 236 million in emergency aid payments to 22 European Union Member States.<br />
<br />
Efforts to prevent such emergencies can be strengthened, however, through development of robust food safety systems that drive collective government and public action to safeguard against chemical or microbial contamination of food. Global and national level measures can be taken, including using international platforms, like the joint WHO-FAO International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN), to ensure effective and rapid communication during food safety emergencies.<br />
<br />
At the consumer end of the food supply chain, the public plays important roles in promoting food safety, from practising safe food hygiene and learning how to take care when cooking specific foods that may be hazardous (like raw chicken), to reading the labels when buying and preparing food. The <a href="http://www.who.int/foodsafety/publications/consumer/flyer_keys_eng.pdf?ua=1" target="_blank">WHO Five Keys to Safer Food</a> explain the basic principles that each individual should know all over the world to prevent foodborne diseases.<br />
<br />
“It often takes a crisis for the collective consciousness on food safety to be stirred and any serious response to be taken,” says Dr Kazuaki Miyagishima, Director of WHO’s Department of Food Safety and Zoonoses. “The impacts on public health and economies can be great. A sustainable response, therefore, is needed that ensures standards, checks and networks are in place to protect against food safety risks.”<br />
<br />
WHO is working to ensure access to adequate, safe, nutritious food for everyone. The Organization supports countries to prevent, detect and respond to foodborne disease outbreaks—in line with the Codex Alimentarius, a collection of international food standards, guidelines and codes of practice covering all the main foods.<br />
<br />
Food safety is a cross-cutting issue and shared responsibility that requires participation of non-public health sectors (i.e. agriculture, trade and commerce, environment, tourism) and support of major international and regional agencies and organizations active in the fields of food, emergency aid, and education.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2015/food-safety/en/" target="_blank">http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2015/food-safety/en/</a><br />
<br />
<br />
Five Keys<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
Five Keys messages regarding Food Safety - Disseminate all over the world.</h2>
<br />
Keep clean<br />
<br />
• Wash your hands before handling food and often during<br />
food preparation<br />
• Wash your hands after going to the toilet<br />
• Wash and sanitize all surfaces and equipment used for<br />
food preparation<br />
• Protect kitchen areas and food from insects, pests and<br />
other animals<br />
<br />
Separate raw and cooked<br />
<br />
• Separate raw meat, poultry and seafood from other foods<br />
• Use separate equipment and utensils such as knives and cutting boards for handling raw foods<br />
• Store food in containers to avoid contact between raw and prepared foods<br />
<br />
Cook thoroughly<br />
<br />
• Cook food thoroughly, especially meat, poultry, eggs and seafood<br />
• Bring foods like soups and stews to boiling to make sure that they have reached 70°C. For meat and poultry, make sure that juices are clear, not pink. Ideally, use a thermometer<br />
• Reheat cooked food thoroughly<br />
<br />
Keep food at safe temperatures<br />
<br />
• Do not leave cooked food at room temperature for more than 2 hours<br />
• Refrigerate promptly all cooked and perishable food (preferably below 5°C)<br />
• Keep cooked food piping hot (more than 60°C) prior to serving<br />
• Do not store food too long even in the refrigerator<br />
• Do not thaw frozen food at room temperature<br />
<br />
Use safe water and raw materials<br />
<br />
• Use safe water or treat it to make it safe<br />
• Select fresh and wholesome foods<br />
• Choose foods processed for safety, such as pasteurized milk<br />
• Wash fruits and vegetables, especially if eaten raw<br />
• Do not use food beyond its expiry date<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<h2 style="text-align: left;">
World Health Day 2013 Theme - High Blood Pressure</h2>
<br />
Goals: Greater awareness, healthy behaviours, improved detection, and enabling environments<br />
<br />
<br />
About high blood pressure<br />
<br />
High blood pressure – also known as raised blood pressure or hypertension – increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. If left uncontrolled, high blood pressure can also cause blindness, irregularities of the heartbeat and heart failure. The risk of developing these complications is higher in the presence of other cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes. One in three adults worldwide has high blood pressure. The proportion increases with age, from 1 in 10 people in their 20s and 30s to 5 in 10 people in their 50s. Prevalence of high blood pressure is highest in some low-income countries in Africa, with over 40% of adults in many African countries thought to be affected.<br />
<br />
However, high blood pressure is both preventable and treatable. In some developed countries, prevention and treatment of the condition, together with other cardiovascular risk factors, has brought about a reduction in deaths from heart disease. The risk of developing high blood pressure can be reduced by:<br />
<br />
reducing salt intake;<br />
eating a balanced diet;<br />
avoiding harmful use of alcohol;<br />
taking regular physical activity;<br />
maintaining a healthy body weight; and<br />
avoiding tobacco use.<br />
<br />
Goals: Greater awareness, healthy behaviours, improved detection, and enabling environments<br />
<br />
The ultimate goal of World Health Day 2013 is to reduce heart attacks and strokes. Specific objectives of the campaign are:<br />
<br />
to raise awareness of the causes and consequences of high blood pressure;<br />
to provide information on how to prevent high blood pressure and related complications;<br />
to encourage adults to check their blood pressure and to follow the advice of health-care professionals;<br />
to encourage self-care to prevent high blood pressure;<br />
to make blood pressure measurement affordable to all; and<br />
to incite national and local authorities to create enabling environments for healthy behaviours.<br />

<br />
<br />
About the Day<br />
<br />
<br />
The ILO celebrates the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on the 28 April to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. It is an awareness-raising campaign intended to focus international attention on emerging trends in the field of occupational safety and health and on the magnitude of work-related injuries, diseases and fatalities worldwide.<br />
<br />
The 28th of April is also a day in which the world's trade union movement holds its international Commemoration Day for Dead and injured Workers to honour the memory of victims of occupational accidents and diseases and organize worldwide mobilizations and campaigns on this date.<br />
<br />
The celebration of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an integral part of the Global Strategy on Occupational Safety and Health of the ILO and promotes the creation of a global preventative safety and health culture involving all stakeholders. In many parts of the world, national authorities, trade unions, employers' organizations and safety and health practitioners organize activities to celebrate this date.<br />

Importance of Social Media in Marketing Media Mix<br />
<br />
As of April 2012, social media accounted for 7.4 percent of the marketing budgets of American companies. A survey released from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business indicated that social media share will rise to 19.5 percent of company marketing budgets within five years. This dramatic increase in funding for social media marketing among corporations signifies that entire careers can be based on the effective use of social media vehicles, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Linkedin for businesses.<br />

<h2 style="text-align: left;">
Father's Day - 20 June 2021</h2>
<br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Father's Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, William Jackson Smart was a Civil War veteran and as a single parent, he raised his six children. After hearing a sermon about Mother's Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. She wanted it to happen on June 5, her father's birthday, but the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In the 1920s, Dodd went to Chicago to study in the Art Institute of Chicago and the event faded into relative obscurity. In the 1930s Dodd returned to Spokane and started promoting the celebration again and raised the awareness at a national level. She took the help of those trade groups that supply men's gift items, for example the manufacturers of ties and tobacco pipes. In 1938, the Father's Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men's Wear Retailers came into existence to consolidate and systematize the commercial promotion. Americans resisted the holiday during a few decades, but the trade groups kept promoting it and eventually succeeded. By the mid-1980s the Father's Council stated that Father's Day sales are only next to Christmas Day sales for all the men's gift-oriented industries.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
Background<br />
<br />
On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.<br />
<br />
Girls face discrimination and violence every day across the world. The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
2018<br />
<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
Theme: “With Her: A Skilled Girl Force”</h2>
<br />
Educate your girl child. Make her a skilled person.<br />
Many girls are excelling in number of fields. No field of work or effort is beyond her reach.<br />
Believe in your girl child. Provide her the best education and skills.<br />
You will be benefited as a parent. You will have more happiness in your life. You will have more satisfaction as a person who fulfilled his or her obligation to the life process and purpose.<br />
<br />
<br />
2016<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
Theme: “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement”</h2>
<br />
There are 1.1 billion girls today, a powerful constituency for shaping a sustainable world that’s better for everyone. They are brimming with talent and creativity. But their dreams and potential are often thwarted by discrimination, violence and lack of equal opportunities. There are glaring gaps in data and knowledge about the specific needs and challenges that girls face.<br />
<br />
What gets counted, gets done. The theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, on 11 October, “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement”, is a call for action for increased investment in collecting and analyzing girl-focused, girl-relevant and sex-disaggregated data. One year into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, improving data on girls and addressing the issues that are holding them back is critical for fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals<br />
<br />
One such issue that is standing in the way of girls’ progress is child marriage. The data is daunting—one in three girls in developing countries (except China) get married before they turn 18. Girls who are child brides miss out on education, are more vulnerable to physical and sexual violence, and bear children before they are physically or emotionally prepared. The cycle of violence that begins in girlhood, carries over into womanhood and across generations. The 2030 Agenda must address their needs and unlock their potential.<br />
<br />
UN Women works around the world to empower women and girls and raise awareness on their rights, advocate for the adoption and implementation of laws and policies that prohibit and prevent child marriage, and mobilize communities against the practice.<br />
<br />
On the International Day of the Girl Child, we stand with the global community to support girls’ progress everywhere. Let girls be girls.<br />
<a href="http://www.unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/girl-child" target="_blank">http://www.unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/girl-child</a><br />
<br />
<br />
2015<br />
<br />
2015 Theme: The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030<br />
<br />
<br />
This year, as the international community assesses progress under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) since their implementation in 2000 and sets goals to be achieved by 2030, girls born at the turn of the millennium have reached adolescence, and the generation of girls born this year will be adolescents in 2030. As we reflect on the achievements of the past 15 years and plan sustainable development goals for the next 15, it is an opportune time to consider the importance of social, economic, and political investment in the power of adolescent girls as fundamental to breaking the intergenerational transmission of poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination and to achieving equitable and sustainable development outcomes.<br />
<br />
Adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, not only during these critical formative years, but also as they mature into women. If effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world – both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders. An investment in realising the power of adolescent girls upholds their rights today and promises a more equitable and prosperous future, one in which half of humanity is an equal partner in solving the problems of climate change, political conflict, economic growth, disease prevention, and global sustainability.<br />
<br />
Over the last 15 years, the global community has made significant progress in improving the lives of girls during early childhood. In 2015, girls in the first decade of life are more likely to enrol in primary school, receive key vaccinations, and are less likely to suffer from health and nutrition problems than were previous generations. However, there has been insufficient investment in addressing the challenges girls face when they enter the second decade of their lives. This includes obtaining quality secondary and higher education, avoiding child marriage, receiving information and services related to puberty and reproductive health, and protecting themselves against unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease and gender-based violence.<br />
<br />
As the global community launches the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for implementation over the next 15 years, it is a good time to recognise the achievements made in supporting young girls, while at the same time aspiring to support the current and upcoming generation of adolescent girls, to truly fulfil their potential as key actors in achieving a sustainable and equitable world. In recognition of the importance of investing in adolescent girls’ empowerment and rights, both today and in the future, the theme of International Day of the Girl Child for 2015 is: The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030.<br />
<br />
UN agencies, Member States, civil society organizations, and private sector stakeholders are called on to commit to putting adolescent girls at the centre of sustainable development efforts by making the following critical investments in their present and future:<br />
<br />
Invest in high quality education, skills, training, access to technology and other learning initiatives that prepare girls for life, jobs, and leadership.<br />
Invest in health and nutrition suitable to the adolescent years, including puberty education, menstrual hygiene management, and sexual and reproductive health education and services.<br />
Promote zero tolerance against physical, mental, and sexual violence.<br />
Enact and consistently implement social, economic, and policy mechanisms to combat early marriage and female genital mutilation.<br />
Invest in the creation and maintenance of social and public spaces for civic and political engagement, creativity and talent enhancement.<br />
Promote gender-responsive legislation and policies across all areas especially for adolescent girls who are disabled, vulnerable and marginalized, and victims of trafficking and sexual exploitation.<br />
The commitment by the global community to realising the potential of adolescent girls will directly translate into the girls as powerful and positive change agents for their own empowerment, for advancing gender equality and for the sustainable advancement of their nations.<br />

On 15 September, volunteers and partners worldwide will come together to rid our planet of trash – cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets.<br />
<br />
A powerful ‘green wave’ of cleanups will start in New Zealand and end 36 hours later in Hawaii, with millions of people working towards one goal: a clean and healthy planet.<br />
<br />
World Cleanup Day harnesses the power of everyday people to achieve incredible things by joining together. Its beauty lies in cooperation and collaboration: building bridges between disparate communities, and including all levels of society - from citizens, to business, to government.<br />

Estonia celebrates its 100th anniversary this year (2018), World Cleanup Day 2018 is the country’s gift to the world.<br />

20 per cent of the world’s population to be old persons by 2050</h3>
<br />
By 2050, 2 billion people, over 20 per cent of the world’s population, will be 60 or older.<br />
A good situation. But how to provide facilities for making their life comfortable and worth living.<br />
Let us foresee, think and plan.<br />
<br />
About the Day<br />
<br />
On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons.
<br />

The 2018 theme “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions“. </h3>
<br />
Let us celebrate the older people around the world who dedicated their lives to championing human rights?<br />
<br />
They are as diverse as the society in which they live: from older people advocating for human rights at the grass root and community level to high profile figures on the international stage.<br />
<br />
The 2018 theme aims to:<br />
<br />
Promote the rights enshrined in the Declaration and what it means in the daily lives of older persons;<br />
<br />
Raise the visibility of older people as participating members of society committed to improving the enjoyment of human rights in many areas of life and not just those that affect them immediately;<br />
<br />
Reflect on progress and challenges in ensuring full and equal enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms by older persons; and<br />
<br />
Engage broad audiences across the world and mobilize people for human rights at all stages of life.<br />

“Longevity: Shaping the Future”
<br />
The theme of the 2012 commemoration is “Longevity: Shaping the Future”. Ageing and health was also the theme of this year's World Health Day on 7 April. These themes focus on how healthy behaviours throughout life can help older men and women lead full and productive lives and be a resource for their families and communities.

<br />
<br />
<br />
The date is promoted by by socialist and communist political parties to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on 4 May 1886.<br />
<br />
The Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions (which would later become the American Federation of Labor, or AFL) held a convention in Chicago in 1884 and proclaimed “eight hours shall constitute a legal day’s labor from and after May 1, 1886.”<br />
<br />
The following year the Knights of Labor – then America’s largest labor organization – backed the proclamation and both groups encouraged workers to strike and demonstrate in favor of the demand.<br />
<br />
On May 1, 1886, more than 300,000 workers (40,000 in Chicago alone) from 13,000 business walked out of their jobs across the country. In the following days, more workers joined and the number of strikers grew.<br />
<br />
HAYMARKET RIOT<br />
On May 3, Chicago police and workers clashed at the McCormick Reaper Works. The next day a rally was held at Haymarket Square to protest the killing and wounding of several workers by the police.<br />
<br />
When the speaker, August Spies, was winding down, a group of officers arrived to disperse the crowd. As the police advanced, a bomb was thrown into their ranks. Chaos ensued, and at least seven police officers and eight civilians died as a result of the violence that day.<br />
<br />
A few years after the Haymarket Riot and subsequent trials shocked the world, a newly formed coalition of socialist and labor parties in Europe called for a demonstration to honor the “Haymarket Martyrs.” In 1890, over 300,000 people protested at a May Day rally in London.<br />
<br />
Subsequently, the Russian bolsheviks celebrated May Day with fervor.<br />

In Service of Our Planet Earth</h2>
<br />
Earth Day is an extraordinary event. It combines the functions of educator, movement builder and the largest public service project in the world. More than one billion people from almost every single country on earth will take an action in service to our planet.<br />
<br />
<br />
About The Day<br />
<br />
<br />
The idea came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after he witnessed the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. He was inspired by the student anti-war movement and he felt that if he could bring air and water pollution into public consciousness and create a similar movement, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a “national teach-in on the environment” to the national media; persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair; and recruited Denis Hayes as national coordinator. Hayes built a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land.<br />
<br />
As a result, on the 22nd of April, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife came together and realized they shared common agenda and objectives<br />
<br />
The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.<br />

Earth Day 2018 Theme: End Plastic Pollution</h2>
<br />
From poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet.<br />
<br />
In response, Earth Day 2018 is dedicated to providing the information and<br />
inspiration needed to fundamentally change human attitude and behavior about plastics.<br />
<br />
Choose an option below to take action to End Plastic Pollution on Earth Day and beyond!<br />

Earth Day Network’s Canopy Project</h2>
<br />
<b>In just one year, a mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen as 10 people inhale!</b><br />
<br />
Earth Day Network’s Canopy Project works worldwide to strengthen communities through tree planting. Using agroforestry, sapling distribution and tree care training, we empower organizations and citizens to conserve, repair, and restore tree cover to their lands. Earth Day Network targets areas of the world most in need of reforestation, including some of the world’s poorest communities; and land degraded by logging, fires, floods, hurricanes and earthquakes. Our projects also focus on environmentally critical areas such the Amazon rainforest and the Boreal Forest.<br />
<br />
Trees provide food, energy and income, helping communities achieve long-term economic and environmental sustainability. Trees also filter the air and help reverse the impacts of climate change. In just one year, a mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen as 10 people inhale!<br />
<br />
Since 2010, Earth Day Network has planted tens of millions of trees. Our goal for the 50 anniversary of Earth Day in 2020 is to plant 7.8 billion trees, one for every person on earth.<br />
<br />
<b>You can help support the Canopy Project by donating to our $1 per tree program. Each dollar you donate supports the planting of one tree.</b><br />
<br />
Planting trees strengthens local economies. Every dollar spent on reforestation generates $2.50 in local downstream income and benefits. That’s huge impact for every dollar you donate!<br />

About the Day</h2>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/47/193 of 22 December 1992 by which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) contained in Chapter 18 (Fresh Water Resources) of Agenda 21. States were invited to devote the Day, as appropriate in the national context, to concrete activities such as the promotion of public awareness through the publication and diffusion of documentaries and the organization of conferences, round tables, seminars and expositions related to the conservation and development of water resources and the implementation of the recommendations of Agenda 21.</div>

Data Issue<br />
You cannot manage what you do not measure”<br />
It is all but impossible to make informed water management decisions without reliable, sufficient, and freely available water data. Obtaining such data, however (or accessing data from other nations — some of which see security risks in sharing), has always proven difficult.<br />
We have the means to do much better in measurement of water. And when that potential is realized, perhaps then we will do much better, globally and locally, managing this vital resource as well.<br />

<h2>
<br />
Message from Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO</h2>
<div>
<br />
on the occasion of World Water Day “Clean Water for a Healthy World”</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Water is fundamental to life on earth. For human populations and ecosystems to thrive, that water must be clean, it must stay clean and, most importantly, it must be accessible to all.</div>
<div>
<br />
World Water Day 2010 calls for “ Clean Water for a Healthy World ”. As we celebrate this Day, let us consider the facts. More than 2.5 billion people live without proper sanitation. An estimated 884 million people, the majority of them in Africa, do not have access to safe drinking water. Some 1.5 million children under five die each year from sickness caused by water-borne diseases. The degradation of water quality in rivers, streams, lakes, and groundwater systems has a direct impact on ecosystems and human health. This state of affairs represents an unspeakable human tragedy, and is also major obstacle to development.</div>
<div>
<br />
Water-related sickness and the additional financial hardship it brings, lowers the odds that a poor family will educate its children. This, in turn, robs the next generation of the opportunity to improve their own circumstances and break the cycle of poverty and deprivation trapping them. Clean water and proper sanitation are where it all starts. A key approach to addressing water quality challenges should be based on pollution prevention, control and restoration strategies.</div>
<div>
<br />
Numerous rivers, once the source of human prosperity and rich wildlife, are now heavily polluted. The degradation of water quality in surface and groundwater systems is further exacerbating water scarcity and negatively impacting our natural environment and the ecosystem services and goods that it provides, jeopardizing food security and livelihoods.</div>
<div>
<br />
In these cost-cutting times, when economic difficulties jeopardise investment in development, let us be clear that developmental progress more than pays for itself. It has been estimated that achieving the Millenium Development Goals for access to safe water and sanitation would produce a global saving of more than $84 billion. We already have the scientific knowledge to make immediate strides in the<br />
provision of clean water and sanitation, provided the funding is there. Researchers are developing new and ingenious ways of protecting surface waters and groundwater systems from pollution, and ensuring better water management.</div>
<div>
<br />
As the lead UN agency for water sciences and education, UNESCO is moving ahead with an array of programmes to further this know-how. UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme is actively engaged in fostering science and knowledge for protecting the quality of surface waters and groundwater systems. Likewise, UNESCO is an active contributor to the monitoring of the state of the world’s freshwater resources in the World Water Development Report coordinated by the World Water Assessment Programme, whose secretariat is hosted and led by UNESCO. Since 2003, UNESCO has overseen the training of dozens of water scientists and engineers from developing countries at the Netherlands based UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, a world-ranking establishment.<br />
UNESCO promotes capacity building for better management of water resources through its water centres and chairs operating under the auspices of UNESCO in many parts of the world.</div>
<div>
<br />
Much remains to be done if we are to make a difference to the lives of millions of people. On this World Water Day, I urge Governments, civil society, the private sector and all stakeholders to put the goal of “Clean Water for a Healthy World” at the forefront of their priorities.</div>

<h2>
PepsiCo Marks World Water Day 2010 with Global Water Goals</h2>
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) announced global goals to provide access to safe water to three million people in developing countries by 2015 and to continuously strive for positive water balance in company operations in water-distressed areas.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After more than a decade of actively promoting sustainable water resource management, PepsiCo continues to drive responsible water solutions that are socially responsible, scientifically based and economically sound. Some of PepsiCo's water initiatives and milestones include:</div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In 2009, PepsiCo saved more than 11 billion liters of water through efficiency improvements.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the U.S., the company began cleaning new Gatorade bottles with purified air instead of rinsing with water. The method works so well it is being adopted, along with other conservation techniques, by bottling facilities around the world, saving billions of liters of water from going down the drain.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the UK, PepsiCo Walkers' business has already reduced water usage at its largest potato chip facility by 42 percent between 2001 and 2007. Potatoes naturally contain a lot of water, and Walkers is working to capture that moisture and use it to make the UK facilities essentially self-sufficient in water, unplugged from the water mains.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Agriculture uses 70 percent of the world's water. That's why in China, PepsiCo is sharing conservation techniques with its local farmers. These efforts have cut the water usage required to grow potatoes for Lay's potato chips in China by more than half.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In India, PepsiCo beverage operations reduced water use in manufacturing by more than 45 percent and conserved more than 3 billion liters of water since 2007, achieving positive water balance – giving back more water than the company consumed.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One of PepsiCo India's most successful initiatives has been its work with farmers to reduce the amount of water used in rice cultivation. The company introduced a technology called "direct seeding." Rather than growing seedlings in a nursery, planting them, then flooding the fields, direct seeding allows seeds to be planted directly into the ground, bypassing the nursery. This also removes the need for flood irrigation, and saves as much 30 percent of water needed. In 2009, direct seeding was extended to more than 6,500 acres of land resulting in savings of 5.5 billion liters of water.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Australia, PepsiCo's Smith's snacks manufacturing facility commissioned the first wastewater reuse system, which will dramatically reduce stress on local water resources at a time when the country is facing one of the worst droughts in history. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In China, PepsiCo is teaching farmers to grow potatoes and other cash crops in desert conditions. The farmers are replacing traditional flood irrigation with pivot and drip irrigation. In drip irrigation, small holes in pipes literally 'drip' water on the field, reducing water usage by up to 50 percent. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Arizona, PepsiCo equipped the Frito-Lay facility in Casa Grande with a state-of-the-art water filtration and purification system to recycle and reuse approximately 80 percent of the process water used in production. For 10 consecutive years, PepsiCo has significantly reduced the amount of water used to make our Frito-Lay products in North America.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Mexico, the Gatorade plant installed a rain water harvest system, which collected 640 cubic meters of water in 2009. This has helped recharge the underground aquifer affected by Mexico City's population growth and has contributed to the business's overall water usage reduction of 10.5 percent vs. 2008.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since 2005, the PepsiCo Foundation has committed more than $15 million to initiatives that provide access to safe water and sanitation to communities in developing countries.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In 2011, The PepsiCo Foundation will reach its goal of providing access to safe water and sanitation to 1 million people. This will be achieved through support of such partners as Water.org, Safe Water Network, The Energy Resources Institute, China Women's Development Foundation and the Earth Institute at Columbia University. These projects are helping to install village water and irrigation systems, establishing water health centers, constructing nearly 750 rainwater harvesting cisterns, improve sanitation programs and recharge aquifers in developing communities, particularly in Ghana, Kenya, Brazil, China and India.</div>

The events related to the day are certainly useful in making people aware of issues and make them sensitive. Morning I had a casual look at an advertisment in the paper. But when I got down from my bus, I observed a person full covered carrying the messages related to World Water Day at the gate of Larsen and Toubro, a large Engineering company of India situated at Powai, Mumbai. There are more volunteer behind him with T-shirts having world water day message. I came to the office and started this knol to share the event with knol readers and authors. Let us make more people aware of the issue and help in promoting investment in providing clean water to all people of the world.</div>

Support Recycling</h2>
<br />
Seventh Resource - Recycled or Recyclable Materials<br />
<br />
The power of the Seventh Resource must be recognized by leaders around the world, through seven concrete changes:<br />
<br />
Focus on international legislation and agreements.<br />
Support, and campaign for, free sustainable trade of recyclable materials to ecologically sound companies across the globe.<br />
Educate, from grass roots up, the public on the critical necessity of recycling.<br />
Agree to a common language of recycling.<br />
To make recycling a community issue, supporting schemes and initiatives which help households and businesses provide Seventh Resource materials for repurposing.<br />
Work with the industry to encourage ‘design for recycling’ in the repurposing of materials – reducing waste, integrating ‘end-of-life’ planning at design stage.<br />
Support innovation, research and initiatives that foster better recycling practices and technology.<br />
<br />

Srinivasa Ramanujan - Biography</h2>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Srinivasa Ramanujan (22 December 1887 – 26 April 1920) was a mathematician, who made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.</div>
<br />
Ramanujan independently compiled nearly 3900 results (mostly identities and equations). <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ramanujan went to Cambridge in 1914. Hardy, his collaborator at Cambridge said Ramanujan could have become an outstanding mathematician if his skills had been recognized earlier. It was said about his talents of continued fractions and hypergeometric series that, “he was unquestionably one of the great masters.” It was due to his sharp memory, calculative mind, patience and insight that he was a great formalist of his days.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
G.H. Hardy spoke on some of Ramanujan’s (as yet unpublished) research at the London Mathematical Society at the monthly meeting on 11 June 1914. June 11 is a landmark date for modern Indian mathematics.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He got elected as the fellow in 1918 at the Trinity College at Cambridge and the Royal Society. He departed from this world on April 26, 1920.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In 1918, Hardy and Ramanujan studied the partition function P(n) extensively and gave a non-convergent asymptotic series that permits exact computation of the number of partitions of an integer. Hans Rademacher, in 1937, was able to refine their formula to find an exact convergent series solution to this problem. Ramanujan and Hardy's work in this area gave rise to a powerful new method for finding asymptotic formulae, called the circle method.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He discovered mock theta functions in the last year of his life.For many years these functions were a mystery, but they are now known to be the holomorphic parts of harmonic weak Maass forms.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
The Ramanujan conjecture<br />
<br />
Ramanujam has many conjectures to his credit<br />
<br />
One conjecture has connection with conjectures of André Weil in algebraic geometry that opened up new areas of research. Ramanujan conjecture is an assertion on the size of the tau-function, which has as generating function the discriminant modular form Δ(q), a typical cusp form in the theory of modular forms. It was finally proven in 1973, as a consequence of Pierre Deligne's proof of the Weil conjectures. The reduction step involved is complicated. Deligne won a Fields Medal in 1978 for his work on Weil conjectures.<br />

Stand Up at least Three Hours a Day</h2>
<br />
Stand Up India, is a public awareness campaign that seeks to make people aware of the dangers of prolonged sitting, urging them to be more active. People who sit for 6-7 hours every day are at an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and shorter life spans as well as becoming overweight. A report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in January 2015 finds that long hours of sitting increases an individuals risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Standing for at least one-fourth of the day decreases this risk, observes a research by the American Cancer Society in collaboration with The Cooper Institute, the University of Texas and the University of Georgia. Standing for an hour can help burn approximately 50 extra kilo calories. So by standing for two hours a day (extra 100 calories burn) for a year one can lose more than 36,500 calories (that is walking at least 15 to 186 marathons), or nearly five kgs.<br />
<br />
Vandana Luthra made the appeal: "I urge you to stand up for your health. Log on to www.orangepledge.com and take the Orange Pledge if you agree to stand up against obesity.<br />

<br /><br />
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed every year since 1993, when the United Nations General Assembly, by resolution 47/196, designated this day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries. Poverty eradication remains at the core of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the development of the new Sustainable Development Goals.<br />

2017<br />
<br />
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the declaration by the General Assembly, in its resolution 47/196 of 22 December 1992, of 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Call to Action by Father Joseph Wresinski — which inspired the observance of October 17 as the World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty — and the recognition by the United Nations of the day as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.<br />
<br />

2017 theme — Answering the Call of October 17 to end poverty: A path toward peaceful and inclusive societies</h2>
<br />
<br />
The Call to Action recognizes the need for building an alliance with citizens from all backgrounds to end poverty.<br />

<br />
2015 Theme:<br />
Building a sustainable future: Coming together to end poverty and discrimination<br />
<br />
The 2015 observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is a special one, as it comes on the heels of the adoption of <b>Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.</b> The Agenda, which succeeds the Millennium Development Goals, contains 17 new and ambitious goals – foremost among them, to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere".<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Goal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere<br />
1.1<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><b>By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day</b><br />
<br />
1.2 By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions<br />
1.3 Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable<br />
1.4<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance<br />
1.5 By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters<br />
1.a Ensure significant mobilization of resources from a variety of sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, in order to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries, to implement programmes and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions<br />
1.b Create sound policy frameworks at the national, regional and international levels, based on pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies, to support accelerated investment in poverty eradication actions<br />
