Challenging and improving the status quo and solving problems effectively through new products, improved products, and redesigned products at less cost -  new processes,  improved processes, and processes redesigned for less cost (Management and Industrial Engineering)  either starting from customers' needs or abilities of technologies.

August 21 - World Entrepreneurs’ Day

Business schools can invite their alumni to encourage them to become entrepreneurs. Then can invite their alumni who are entrepreneurs to guide their friends regarding the rewards of entrepreneurship and can offer the way to entrepreneurship.

Activities that could be organized on 21st of August could cover conferences teaching constructive ways to challenge and improve the status quo, talks that help young generations to grow as effective problem solvers.

Business Schools are suggested to organize conferences to celebrate the World Entrepreneurs' Day by inviting entrepreneurs and  CEOs.

Businesses are suggested to provide discounts and promotions during the World Entrepreneur's Day.

Government entities, public authorities and universities are suggested to distribute communicative and instructive materials regarding entrepreneurship and its importance.

Radio and television networks are suggested to prepare programs to highlight the importance of entrepreneurship and provide talk-shows or documentaries to educate the population.

Businesses could organize open door days and tours during the World Entrepreneurs' Days, especially for younger audiences.

Participatory business and innovation activities, local talks, lectures, presentations, workshops and debates could be organized to create both awareness and as a cultural activity to promote entrepreneurship.

Organize local awards for businesses or leadership, both for established businesses and enterprises and for young entrepreneurs.

Create and publish a press release regarding the activities you would organize during the World Entreprenerus' Day.

World Humanitarian Day - 19 August

About the Day

World Humanitarian Day falls on 19 August, the day in 2003 when 22 aid workers were killed in a bombing at the UN headquarters in Baghdad. It's a day to commemorate all people who have lost their lives in humanitarian service and to celebrate the spirit of people helping people that motivates this work. This year the World Humanitarian Day project is a month-long campaign of events around the world to raise much-needed funds to continue the effort to help others.

2013 Theme: The World Needs More…


World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognize those who face danger and adversity in order to help others. The day was designated by the General Assembly to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.

19 August, 2013 marks 10 years since that tragic event, which claimed 22 lives. This year, the international community will pause to remember those who died, as well as the dozens of aid workers, who have died in the years since.

But World Humanitarian Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe.

This year the UN and its humanitarian partners are launching a ground-breaking campaign called The world needs more… This is a first-of-its-kind project that will quite literally turn words into aid.

Big Business

Valentine’s day – Fathers day – friendship day and the list goes on & on this was really unheard of 10 years ago, celebrating such days is after all “ Western culture” & big business for retailers. Lately I have seen that we too have got up from our slumber & started celebrating Hanuman Jayanti, Gudi Padva, etc, in a bigger way then ever before, we indeed needed such a cultural jolt :)

About the Day

Since nuclear weapons testing began in the mid-twentieth century, with the first test on 16 July 1945, nearly 2,000 have taken place. There has been little consideration of the devastating effects of testing on human life, let alone the understanding of nuclear fallout from atmospheric tests.

On 2 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests by unanimously adopting resolution 64/35. The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.” The resolution was initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with a large number of sponsors and cosponsors with a view to commemorate the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site on 29 August 1991.The Day is meant to galvanize the United Nations, Member States, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, youth networks and the media to inform, educate and advocate the necessity of banning nuclear weapon tests as a valuable step towards achieving a safer world.

2010 marked the inaugural commemoration of the International Day against Nuclear Tests. Each year, since then, the day has been observed by coordinating various activities throughout the world, such as symposia, conferences, exhibits, competitions, publications, instruction in academic institutions, media broadcasts and others

International Day of the World Indigenous People - 9 August

Background

On 23 December 1994, the General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People shall be observed on 9 August every year during the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (resolution 49/214 [pdf]).

By its resolution 59/174 [pdf] of 20 December 2004, in which the Assembly proclaimed the Second International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (2005-2014), it also decided to continue observing the International Day of Indigenous People every year during the Second Decade, in New York, Geneva and other offices of the United Nations. The Assembly asked the Secretary-General to support observance of the Day from within existing resources, and to encourage Governments to observe the Day at the national level.

A special event at UN Headquarters in New York will be held on Friday, 9 August, starting at 3pm, featuring the UN Secretary-General, the Chairperson of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, a delegate of Panama, a representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, and an indigenous representative. The event will be webcast live at webtv.un.org.

Also on 9 August, hundreds of indigenous and non-indigenous rowers are scheduled to arrive at Pier 96 at 57th Street in Manhattan at 10am, after having collectively travelled thousands of miles on rivers and horsebacks to honour the first treaty -– the Two Row Wampum -– concluded between Dutch immigrants and the Haudenosaunee (a confederacy of six nations, with capital in the Onondaga nation, in NY State) 400 years ago, in 1613. They will gather with members of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza at 1:30pm.

Ideas for Action and Celebration

 

Team up! It is a great opportunity to rally support and get key actors involved - Governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, businesses, and young people - to focus on what has been done to further the World Programme of Action for Youth.

Organize! Hold forums, public discussions and information campaigns in support of young people focusing on youth issues and how they can be addressed.

Celebrate! Plan and organize performances everywhere to showcase - and celebrate – the fact that youth contribute to the societies in which they live. Convene exchanges and dialogues focusing on the rich and varied skills, interests and aspirations of young people.

Take action! A major focus of the Day is practical action to further encourage the empowerment and participation of youth in the processes and decisions that affect their lives. The media have especially an important role to play in support of the observance of the Day to promote public awareness of youth issues.

The United Nations Program on Youth is encouraging youth organizations around the world to host community barter fairs for International Youth Day. Remember, with bartering there is no money involved, only pure exchange of goods and services.

Annual All India Essay Writing Event 2009
 

Shri Ram Chandra Mission in collaboration with the United Nations Information Center for India and Bhutan, presents the Annual All India Essay Writing Event, conducted by the Sahaj Marg Research and Training Institute in commemoration of International Day of Youth, on 12 August 2009. The Annual All India Essay Writing event will be organized in educational institutions across the country. Every year the event sees enthusiastic participation from the best of schools and colleges. This year in commemoration of International Day of Youth, SRCM and the United Nations Information Center for India and Bhutan (UNIC), have joined hands to ignite the hearts and minds of our youth, and encourage them to reflect upon topics that highlight the UN's International theme for the year 2009 — Reconciliation.

 

Participants will be allowed to express themselves in 13 languages including English, Hindi, Sanskrit and Braille, and vie for national, regional and school / college level recognition in each of the 3 categories of participation.
