Health care has to be affordable.

Governments have to plan for Universal Health Care Facilities.

Inspire, Motivate and Guide UHC stakeholders and policy makers and administrators to make commitments towards UHC:

Inspire—by highlighting policy-makers’ power to transform the health of their nation, framing the challenge as exciting and ambitious, and inviting them to be part of the change.

Motivate—by sharing examples of how countries are already progressing towards UHC and encourage others to find their own path.

Guide—by providing tools for structured policy dialogue on how to advance UHC domestically or supporting such efforts in other countries (e.g. expanding service coverage, improving quality of services, reducing out-of-pocket payments).

World Health Day 2017 Depression: Let's talk

Depression affects people of all ages, from all walks of life, in all countries. It causes mental anguish and impacts on people’s ability to carry out even the simplest everyday tasks, with sometimes devastating consequences for relationships with family and friends and the ability to earn a living. At worst, depression can lead to suicide, now the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year olds.

Yet, depression can be prevented and treated. A better understanding of what depression is, and how it can be prevented and treated, will help more sufferers to seek help and encourage others to persuade them to seek help.

What is depression?

Depression is an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks. In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following symptoms: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less; anxiety; reduced concentration; indecisiveness; restlessness; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

World Health Day 2016 -  Stay Super: Beat Diabetes

A healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in sugar and saturated fats can help prevent Type 2 diabetes, and also help people to manage Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes if they have it.

Being physically active – through at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days – can help prevent Type 2 diabetes and its complications, as well as help people to better manage Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes if they have it.

World Health Day 2015 Theme - Foodborne Illnesses

New data on the harm caused by foodborne illnesses underscore the global threats posed by unsafe foods, and the need for coordinated, cross-border action across the entire food supply chain. World Health Day will be celebrated on 7 April, with WHO highlighting the challenges and opportunities associated with food safety under the slogan "From farm to plate, make food safe."

On 2nd April 2015, WHO is issuing the first findings from what is a broader ongoing analysis of the global burden of foodborne diseases. The full results of this research, being undertaken by WHO’s Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG), are expected to be released in October 2015.

Some important results are related to enteric infections caused by viruses, bacteria and protozoa that enter the body by ingestion of contaminated food. The initial FERG figures, from 2010, show that:

there were an estimated 582 million cases of 22 different foodborne enteric diseases and 351 000 associated deaths;
the enteric disease agents responsible for most deaths were Salmonella Typhi (52 000 deaths), enteropathogenic E. coli (37 000) and norovirus (35 000);
the African region recorded the highest disease burden for enteric foodborne disease, followed by South-East Asia;
over 40% people suffering from enteric diseases caused by contaminated food were children aged under 5 years.
Unsafe food also poses major economic risks, especially in a globalized world. Germany’s 2011 E.coli outbreak reportedly caused US$ 1.3 billion in losses for farmers and industries and US$ 236 million in emergency aid payments to 22 European Union Member States.

Efforts to prevent such emergencies can be strengthened, however, through development of robust food safety systems that drive collective government and public action to safeguard against chemical or microbial contamination of food. Global and national level measures can be taken, including using international platforms, like the joint WHO-FAO International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN), to ensure effective and rapid communication during food safety emergencies.

At the consumer end of the food supply chain, the public plays important roles in promoting food safety, from practising safe food hygiene and learning how to take care when cooking specific foods that may be hazardous (like raw chicken), to reading the labels when buying and preparing food. The WHO Five Keys to Safer Food explain the basic principles that each individual should know all over the world to prevent foodborne diseases.

“It often takes a crisis for the collective consciousness on food safety to be stirred and any serious response to be taken,” says Dr Kazuaki Miyagishima, Director of WHO’s Department of Food Safety and Zoonoses. “The impacts on public health and economies can be great. A sustainable response, therefore, is needed that ensures standards, checks and networks are in place to protect against food safety risks.”

WHO is working to ensure access to adequate, safe, nutritious food for everyone. The Organization supports countries to prevent, detect and respond to foodborne disease outbreaks—in line with the Codex Alimentarius, a collection of international food standards, guidelines and codes of practice covering all the main foods.

Food safety is a cross-cutting issue and shared responsibility that requires participation of non-public health sectors (i.e. agriculture, trade and commerce, environment, tourism) and support of major international and regional agencies and organizations active in the fields of food, emergency aid, and education.

World Health Day 2013 Theme - High Blood Pressure

Goals: Greater awareness, healthy behaviours, improved detection, and enabling environments

About high blood pressure

High blood pressure – also known as raised blood pressure or hypertension – increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. If left uncontrolled, high blood pressure can also cause blindness, irregularities of the heartbeat and heart failure. The risk of developing these complications is higher in the presence of other cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes. One in three adults worldwide has high blood pressure. The proportion increases with age, from 1 in 10 people in their 20s and 30s to 5 in 10 people in their 50s. Prevalence of high blood pressure is highest in some low-income countries in Africa, with over 40% of adults in many African countries thought to be affected.

However, high blood pressure is both preventable and treatable. In some developed countries, prevention and treatment of the condition, together with other cardiovascular risk factors, has brought about a reduction in deaths from heart disease. The risk of developing high blood pressure can be reduced by:

reducing salt intake;
eating a balanced diet;
avoiding harmful use of alcohol;
taking regular physical activity;
maintaining a healthy body weight; and
avoiding tobacco use.

Goals: Greater awareness, healthy behaviours, improved detection, and enabling environments

The ultimate goal of World Health Day 2013 is to reduce heart attacks and strokes. Specific objectives of the campaign are:

to raise awareness of the causes and consequences of high blood pressure;
to provide information on how to prevent high blood pressure and related complications;
to encourage adults to check their blood pressure and to follow the advice of health-care professionals;
to encourage self-care to prevent high blood pressure;
to make blood pressure measurement affordable to all; and
to incite national and local authorities to create enabling environments for healthy behaviours.

20 per cent of the world’s population to be old persons by 2050

By 2050, 2 billion people, over 20 per cent of the world’s population, will be 60 or older.
A good situation. But how to provide facilities for making their life comfortable and worth living.
Let us foresee, think and plan.

About the Day

On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons.

The 2018 theme  “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions“.

Let us  celebrate the older people around the world who dedicated their lives to championing human rights?

They are as diverse as the society in which they live: from older people advocating for human rights at the grass root and community level to high profile figures on the international stage.

The 2018 theme aims to:

Promote the rights enshrined in the Declaration and what it means in the daily lives of older persons;

Raise the visibility of older people as participating members of society committed to improving the enjoyment of human rights in many areas of life and not just those that affect them immediately;

Reflect on progress and challenges in ensuring full and equal enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms by older persons; and

Engage broad audiences across the world and mobilize people for human rights at all stages of life.

World Toilet Day - 19 November

The “Sanitation for All’ Resolution (A/RES/67/291) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in July 2013, designating 19 November as World Toilet Day. The Day is coordinated by UN-Water in collaboration with Governments and relevant stakeholders.

2.5 billion people do not have access to proper sanitation, including toilets or latrines, with dramatic consequences on human health, dignity and security, the environment, and social and economic development.

http://www.un.org/en/events/toiletday/

http://www.unwater.org/worldtoiletday

2016

The theme in 2016: Toilets and jobs

This year’s theme focuses on how sanitation, or the lack of it, can impact on livelihoods. Toilets play a crucial role in creating a strong economy.

A lack of toilets at work and at home has severe impacts upon businesses through problems in the workforce: poor health, absenteeism, attrition, reduced concentration, exhaustion, and decreased productivity. Loss of productivity due to illnesses caused by lack of sanitation and poor hygiene practices is estimated to cost many countries up to 5% of GDP.

PROVIDING TOILETS AND OTHER SANITATION SERVICES CREATES JOBS

The global demand for water and sanitation services is worth over $50 billion (Freedonia 2013).  Treating sanitation provision as a long-term business opportunitys, could help  attract investment.

Making it easy for people to set up sanitation businesses, as part of a bigger plan, will help
entrepreneurs to flourish and could accelerate progress. Particularly in the towns and cities of lowincome countries, populations are growing fast and their need for toilets and waste removal is already desperate. Small-scale service providers could play a vital role in getting toilets to people quickly and beginning the transformation of slum areas (WaterAid 2016).

• In the EU, there are more than 2.5 million jobs in the wastewater and solid waste management sectors (Ernst and Young 2006).

• The International Water Association (2014) assessed the capacity gap for trained water and
sanitation professionals to achieve universal water and sanitation access across 15 countries to be over 750,000 individuals.

2014

 What can you do to help make ‘sanitation for all’ a reality this World Toilet Day?

1. Run in The ‘Urgent Run’

Participate in The Urgent Run or host your own event for this year’s UN World Toilet Day. The Urgent Run (www.urgentrun.com) is a global mobilisation event to draw attention to the urgent calls for action to end the sanitation crisis. Sixteen events have been registered in 12 countries including Singapore, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Ghana, Italy, Senegal, and Mozambique.

2. Do a ‘Big Squat’

Hold a big squat and raise awareness of the more than 1 billion people who face the indignity of open defecation, which spreads diseases including cholera, typhoid, hepatitis and diarrhoea. Stop, drop, squat and share! Get friends, colleagues, classmates or family together, invite people in the local community and squat in a public place. Take photos or video, and share them on YouTube, Vimeo, Vine, Instagram, Flickr, Facebook or Twitter. Use the hashtags #bigsquat, #worldtoiletday and #opendefecation.

3. Share

Access to sanitation would make life safer and healthier for 1.25 billion women. Join the global movement for toilets and sanitation for all, and raise awareness by posting on Facebook, Instagram, Google+, posting a Vine or Tweeting this World Toilet Day. Show that you give a crap about toilets and sanitation, and raise your voice to call for action. Use the hashtags #wecantwait #worldtoiletday #opendefecation #sanitation and #igiveashit.

4. Become a public toilet advocate

Clean and safe toilets are fundamental for health, dignity, privacy, equality and education. Contact your local representative, community leader or member of parliament and let them know you care about public toilets in your area. Does your town need new public toilets? Are the toilets safe and accessible, clean and well-maintained? Is there an appropriate ratio of toilets for men and women, or ‘potty parity’?

Talk toilets with your local representative today.

5. Watch

Watch a World Toilet Day playlist and share videos on Facebook or Twitter to join the call for toilets and sanitation for all. Here’s one to start with – meet Mr Toilet. Jack Sim is a man on a mission to end the sanitation crisis, and he started by tackling the toilet taboo. Meet the man behind the World Toilet Organization who is proud to be called ‘Mr. Toilet’.

6. Talk crap!
Have a conversation with neighbours on sanitation. Send an email, send a text, post to Facebook, and raise awareness of the importance of action on sanitation.

7. Toilet Selfie

Encourage your friends to join the sanitation movement with a toilet selfie. Share news about developments in toilet designs etc.

8. Donate and Invest in toilets and sanitation for all

One third of the world’s population still lacks access to adequate sanitation. Donate to support the work of the Social Organizations involved in building toilets.

9. Learn

Did you know that toilets and sanitation are considered a human right? In 2010, the UN General Assembly recognised sanitation and water as a human right, essential to the full enjoyment of life and all other human rights. Visit the UN World Toilet Day website unwater.org/worldtoiletday to learn about the sanitation crisis and how you can get involved.

10. Write a blog post if you are a blogger.

 2016 is the year of the ‘Keyboard Volunteer’

Growth of online volunteering

02 December 2016, Bonn, Germany: To mark International Volunteer Day today, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme has released encouraging new figures demonstrating a rise in ‘keyboard volunteers’ as interest in the UNV.

Online Volunteering service swells.

Research shows that the volume of conversations online around “online volunteering” more than doubled in the last year, with the United States of America accounting for almost 34 per cent of all conversations, while applications for the United Nations Online Volunteering service rose by 10 per cent in the same period.
The new findings mark the launch of a campaign which aims to celebrate the contribution made by the billion volunteers across the world. #GlobalApplause will see stories and recognition shared from and to volunteer-involving organizations all over the world, on Facebook and Twitter.
In addition to the almost 7,000 volunteers working on projects in the field, UNV has a network of over 12,000 online volunteers. For online assignments, organizations and volunteers team up to address sustainable development challenges, with volunteers working from a computer, tablet or mobile phone anywhere in the world, on a vast range of projects, including translation services, graphic design and project management.

Richard Dictus, UN Volunteers Executive Coordinator comments: “Trust in our world, our leaders, our future and our values has been shaken this year by a growing sense of divisiveness, which often comes to a head online and via social media. We’re pleased to see that despite the sometimes negative environment of the web, the internet can still be a force for good and empower thousands of people to make a real difference to communities across the world each day.

While ‘keyboard activists’ can often be derided for failing to make an impact, through the UNV Online Volunteering service, every day volunteers are working for peace and development through the power of their keyboard and today is the perfect opportunity to remember the contribution they – and the billions of people who volunteer across the world -- make.”

International Volunteer Day (IVD), on December 5th, was designated by the United Nations in 1985 as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism. It is an opportunity for volunteers, and volunteer organizations, to raise awareness of, and gain recognition for, the contribution they make to their communities.

International Day of Yoga - 21 June

UNO declared 21 June as International Day of Yoga

WHY YOGA DAY? - TO PROMOTE HEALTH OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE WORLD.

http://www.un.org/en/events/yogaday/

UNO in its resolution said

Recognizing that yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being,
Recognizing also that wider dissemination of information about the benefits of practising yoga would be beneficial for the health of the world population,

UNO Decides to proclaim 21 June the International Day of Yoga.

http://www.un.org/en/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=A/RES/69/131

Hatha Yoga is a programme of postures to improve health and focus.

It is not a religious ritual. Swamy Vivekananda said so. A religious sansyasi only learns some postures so that he can sit in that posture for hours together to do rituals. A hatha yogi lives for hundred years without any religious activity.

Yoga is now embraced internationally as a physical activity that improves health.

World Music Day - June 21

About the Day

In 1976, an American musician, Joel Cohen, employed by the national French radio station, France Musique thought of a day dedicated to celebrating music. in 1982, the thought became reality with the French Government blessing Fete' de la Musique. Two of the caveats to being sanctioned by the official Fête de la Musique organization in Paris are that all concerts must be free to the public, and all

In Paris and Ile-de-France, the return of summer is celebrated in music.

The music day was created in 1982. This nation-wide party of the people has become so important that it has even been exported to over a hundred foreign countries.

On 21st June, both amateur and professional musicians take to the streets to let their creativity run wild. In squares, public gardens and alleyways improvised stages are erected and sound systems blossom at the windows.

Electro DJs, classical, jazz or accordion groups, choirs, French chanson, pop rock or traditional bands...everyone dances and sings with their family and friends in a joyful cacophony.

Bars, concert venues, festivals (and also museums, churches, conservatoires etc...) take the opportunity to remain open until all hours, with free concerts both indoors and on their terraces.

Exceptional free shows are performed by French and international stars, notably in the Place de la Bastille, the Champ de Mars and La Défense.

And to help people get around, public transport services are provided all night long.

International Day of Happiness - 20 March

About the Happiness Day

The General Assembly of the United Nations in its resolution 66/281 of 12 July 2012 proclaimed 20 March the International Day of Happiness recognizing the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives.

Speaking at the High Level Meeting on "Happiness and Well-Being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm" convened during the sixty-sixth session of the General Assembly the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated that the world “needs a new economic paradigm that recognizes the parity between the three pillars of sustainable development. Social, economic and environmental well-being are indivisible. Together they define gross global happiness.”  The meeting was convened at an initiative of Bhutan, a country which recognized the supremacy of national happiness over national income since the early 1970s and famously adopted the goal of Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product.

This year’s International Day of Happiness is focused on Climate Action for a Happy Planet.

The best way to celebrate this International Day of Happiness is by taking action to alleviate suffering. In this spirit, let us use this occasion to renew a global spirit of solidarity to create a safer, more prosperous and more sustainable future for all.

A Poem Written by Me - May be appropriate for Global Spirit of Solidarity

I am Indian
taught by Divine
I believe in union
with God and his Creation

I guard the ground of my own
that does not mean fight with alien
I help my brothern
does not mean rest of  the world I disown

I am ready to help people anywhere
always help neighbours to prosper
I take care of  my land's weak labour
its only makes world stronger

Global trade should not mean disaster
competition should not mean human hunger
share your means and live till God's desire
I am an Indian who wants world's welfare

Message of Ban ki Moon for 20 March 2013

Compassion promotes happiness and will help build the future we want.

"On this first International Day of Happiness, let us reinforce our commitment to inclusive and sustainable human development and renew our pledge to help others. When we contribute to the common good, we ourselves are enriched. Compassion promotes happiness and will help build the future we want."

World Book Day Appeal to Parents

Dear Parent or Carer

World Book Day takes place on Thursday 3 March 2016, and we would like to invite you
to join us in helping your child to make the most of this special occasion.

World Book Day celebrates the joy and value of books and reading, especially for children.
Please help your child to go to a local bookshop or library on this day.

Nurseries, schools and libraries across the World celebrate World Book Day with a huge range of
events and activities. You can help in building your child’s enthusiasm for books well beyond World Book Day by reading together regularly.

Children are never too young to start their journey with books, and the benefits of reading are
enormous—so we hope you will use World Book Day to celebrate it with your child.

With best wishes for getting the best benefit from books.
