16 November - India National Press Day

National Press Day

National Press Day- The 16th of November

There is  a free and responsible press in India.

This was the day on which the Press Council of India started functioning as a moral watchdog to ensure that not only did the press maintain the high standards expected from this powerful medium but also that it was not fettered by the influence or threats of any extraneous factors.

14 November - World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day (WDD)  is marked every year on 14 November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.

WDD was created in 1991 by International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization and became an official United Nations Day in 2006 with the passage of United Nations Resolution 61/225.

World Diabetes Day promotes awareness that every person with diabetes or at risk of diabetes deserves the best possible quality of education, prevention and care available.

______________

Diabetes and well-being is the theme chosen by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) for WDD 2024-26.

For a better diabetes life

This strapline will run across three years. It emphasises the movement towards change in diabetes care that will improve daily life and well-being for those living with the condition.

Campaign Definitions:
well-being: A physical and mental state of being comfortable, healthy or happy.
support for a person’s / people’s well-being: The interventions that can improve a person’s/ people’s well-being.
diabetes life: The daily experience of managing the physical and mental challenges of diabetes alongside home, work and/or school life.

Diabetes life forces you to be more resilient, organised and responsible. It means you have to think about everything you eat and take better care of yourself than others – even the simplest task requires many extra decisions.

Nutrition for Diabetic Patients

------------------------------------

Very Good - Read
Dietary Advice For Individuals with Diabetes
Andrew Reynolds, BSc, MSc, PhD, MPH and Joanna Mitri, MD, MS.
Last Update: April 28, 2024.

Dietary advice for those with diabetes has evolved and have become more flexible and patient centered over time. Nutrition goals 2024 were issued by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Please read 2024 guidelines.

CARBOHYDRATES

Both the type and total amount of carbohydrate (CHO) consumed influences glycemia. Carbohydrate intake should emphasize nutrient-dense carbohydrate sources that are high in fiber (at least 14 g fiber per 1,000 kcal) and minimally processed (1).

Higher intakes of sugars are associated with weight gain and greater incidence of dental caries.

Higher intakes of dietary fiber are associated with reduced non-communicable disease and premature mortality occurrence as well as improvements in body weight, cholesterol concentrations, and blood pressure. These benefits with higher fiber intakes have been observed in the general population, for those with type 1, type 2, and pre diabetes,  and those with hypertension or heart disease.

With this guidance in mind, eating plans should emphasize non-starchy vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains, as well as dairy products with minimal added sugars. There is less consistency of evidence for recommending an amount of overall CHO in the diet.

Dietary Fiber
Current recommendations from the American Diabetes Association are that adults with diabetes should consume high fiber foods (at least 14g fiber per 1,000 kcal). Current recommendations from the European Association for the Study of Diabetes are that adults with diabetes should consume at least 35g dietary fiber per day (or 16.7g per 1,000 kcal). These two values are aligned, and higher than current World Health Organization recommendations for the general population of at least 25g dietary fiber per day,  although all three recommendations recognize a minimum intake level, with greater benefits observed with higher intakes. These values are appreciably higher than current dietary fiber intakes in the United States, which is approximately 16g per day.

Protein

The National Kidney Foundation recommends 0.8 g protein/kg desirable body weight for people with diabetes and stages 1–4 chronic kidney disease as a means of reducing albuminuria and stabilizing kidney function. Reducing the amount of dietary protein below 10% total energy is not recommended as it places people at risk of protein inadequacy (10).

Take The Be Kind Pledge and Make a Commitment to BE KIND!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do people in America celebrate?
There are many ways to get involved and spread kindness. At The Be Kind People Project, we believe kindness is a force that goes to the heart of how people respect, love, honor, communicate with and treat one another. We define kindness as intentionally extending good to others. World Kindness Day is an opportunity for children and adults worldwide to make a commitment to intentionally extend good to others in actions and words. Saying a kind word, calling a friend, helping a neighbor, hugging a loved one, and volunteering or making a donation to a non-profit are just a few examples.

26 November - World Anti-Obesity Day

World Anti-Obesity Day (AOD) is observed in various parts of the world on November 26, with several healthcare organizations  in India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries participating in it.

In 2001, the Indian Wellness brand VLCC, founded by Mrs. Vandana Luthra, took the first step towards creating the celebration of the day to create awareness about  ill-effects of Obesity and ways to prevent it or reduce the overweight through weight reduction programmes.

Stand Up at least Three Hours a Day

Stand Up India, is a public awareness campaign that seeks to make people aware of the dangers of prolonged sitting, urging them to be more active. People who sit for 6-7 hours every day are at an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and shorter life spans as well as becoming overweight.  A report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in January 2015 finds that long hours of sitting increases an individuals risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Standing for at least one-fourth of the day decreases this risk, observes a research by the American Cancer Society in collaboration with The Cooper Institute, the University of Texas and the University of Georgia. Standing for an hour can help burn approximately 50 extra kilo calories. So by standing for two hours a day (extra 100 calories burn) for a year one can lose more than 36,500 calories (that is walking at least 15 to 186 marathons), or nearly five kgs.

Vandana Luthra made the appeal: "I urge you to stand up for your health. Log on to www.orangepledge.com and take the Orange Pledge if you agree to stand up against obesity.

World Toilet Day - 19 November

The “Sanitation for All’ Resolution (A/RES/67/291) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in July 2013, designating 19 November as World Toilet Day. The Day is coordinated by UN-Water in collaboration with Governments and relevant stakeholders.

2.5 billion people do not have access to proper sanitation, including toilets or latrines, with dramatic consequences on human health, dignity and security, the environment, and social and economic development.

http://www.un.org/en/events/toiletday/

http://www.unwater.org/worldtoiletday

2016

The theme in 2016: Toilets and jobs

This year’s theme focuses on how sanitation, or the lack of it, can impact on livelihoods. Toilets play a crucial role in creating a strong economy.

A lack of toilets at work and at home has severe impacts upon businesses through problems in the workforce: poor health, absenteeism, attrition, reduced concentration, exhaustion, and decreased productivity. Loss of productivity due to illnesses caused by lack of sanitation and poor hygiene practices is estimated to cost many countries up to 5% of GDP.

PROVIDING TOILETS AND OTHER SANITATION SERVICES CREATES JOBS

The global demand for water and sanitation services is worth over $50 billion (Freedonia 2013).  Treating sanitation provision as a long-term business opportunitys, could help  attract investment.

Making it easy for people to set up sanitation businesses, as part of a bigger plan, will help
entrepreneurs to flourish and could accelerate progress. Particularly in the towns and cities of lowincome countries, populations are growing fast and their need for toilets and waste removal is already desperate. Small-scale service providers could play a vital role in getting toilets to people quickly and beginning the transformation of slum areas (WaterAid 2016).

• In the EU, there are more than 2.5 million jobs in the wastewater and solid waste management sectors (Ernst and Young 2006).

• The International Water Association (2014) assessed the capacity gap for trained water and
sanitation professionals to achieve universal water and sanitation access across 15 countries to be over 750,000 individuals.

2014

What can you do to help make ‘sanitation for all’ a reality this World Toilet Day?

1. Run in The ‘Urgent Run’

Participate in The Urgent Run or host your own event for this year’s UN World Toilet Day. The Urgent Run (www.urgentrun.com) is a global mobilisation event to draw attention to the urgent calls for action to end the sanitation crisis. Sixteen events have been registered in 12 countries including Singapore, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Ghana, Italy, Senegal, and Mozambique.

2. Do a ‘Big Squat’

Hold a big squat and raise awareness of the more than 1 billion people who face the indignity of open defecation, which spreads diseases including cholera, typhoid, hepatitis and diarrhoea. Stop, drop, squat and share! Get friends, colleagues, classmates or family together, invite people in the local community and squat in a public place. Take photos or video, and share them on YouTube, Vimeo, Vine, Instagram, Flickr, Facebook or Twitter. Use the hashtags #bigsquat, #worldtoiletday and #opendefecation.

3. Share

Access to sanitation would make life safer and healthier for 1.25 billion women. Join the global movement for toilets and sanitation for all, and raise awareness by posting on Facebook, Instagram, Google+, posting a Vine or Tweeting this World Toilet Day. Show that you give a crap about toilets and sanitation, and raise your voice to call for action. Use the hashtags #wecantwait #worldtoiletday #opendefecation #sanitation and #igiveashit.

4. Become a public toilet advocate

Clean and safe toilets are fundamental for health, dignity, privacy, equality and education. Contact your local representative, community leader or member of parliament and let them know you care about public toilets in your area. Does your town need new public toilets? Are the toilets safe and accessible, clean and well-maintained? Is there an appropriate ratio of toilets for men and women, or ‘potty parity’?

Talk toilets with your local representative today.

5. Watch

Watch a World Toilet Day playlist and share videos on Facebook or Twitter to join the call for toilets and sanitation for all. Here’s one to start with – meet Mr Toilet. Jack Sim is a man on a mission to end the sanitation crisis, and he started by tackling the toilet taboo. Meet the man behind the World Toilet Organization who is proud to be called ‘Mr. Toilet’.

6. Talk crap!
Have a conversation with neighbours on sanitation. Send an email, send a text, post to Facebook, and raise awareness of the importance of action on sanitation.

7. Toilet Selfie

Encourage your friends to join the sanitation movement with a toilet selfie. Share news about developments in toilet designs etc.

8. Donate and Invest in toilets and sanitation for all

One third of the world’s population still lacks access to adequate sanitation. Donate to support the work of the Social Organizations involved in building toilets.

9. Learn

Did you know that toilets and sanitation are considered a human right? In 2010, the UN General Assembly recognised sanitation and water as a human right, essential to the full enjoyment of life and all other human rights. Visit the UN World Toilet Day website unwater.org/worldtoiletday to learn about the sanitation crisis and how you can get involved.

10. Write a blog post if you are a blogger.

Oman National Day - 18 November

2014

44th National Day of the Sultanate of Oman.

His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bi Said, Sultan of Oman.

Another Reason

Soon after Vasco Da Gama's voyage round the Cape of Good Hope and to India, the Portuguese arrived in Oman, occupying the region from 1507. The Portuguese fortified Muscat as used the town as a port from which to protect their trade routes to India.

Unhappy with how they felt the Portuguese were exploiting their presence in Oman, the powerful Al-Ya’ribi clan agreed a treaty with the British East India Company to allow the British to have rights in their ports. This weakened Portuguese control in Oman, and on 18 November 1650, Imam Sultan Bin Saif led a rebellion that expelled the Portuguese from Oman and its ports.

About the Day

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 November as World Television Day (through resolution 51/205 of 17 December 1996). This was done in recognition of the increasing impact television has on decision-making by alerting world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security and its potential role in sharpening the focus on other major issues, including economic and social issues.

EBU president Jean-Paul Philippot says public service media television helps strengthen democracy
by ensuring that everyone – including those without political or economic influence – can access
information.

“The EBU has 63 Active TV Members in 55 countries, operating 937 TV channels broadcasting in 69 languages with a potential audience of 1.02 billion people,” Mr Philippot said. “It gives a voice to those who would otherwise go unheard and by serving all sections of society; it promotes tolerance and understanding and facilitates debate around issues of national concern.”

egta President Franz Prenner says the initiative celebrates television’s everlasting audience appeal.
“Television viewing across most European countries is stable or increasing,” said Mr Prenner.
“Throughout the European Union, the average viewer tunes in for 236 minutes a day. The odd
fluctuation cannot mask the big picture that people love to consume quality content on multiple
screens, including OTT. TV is only beginning to embrace its golden age!”

Chairman of the ACT Board of Directors Magnus Brooke describes television as a ‘European success story’.“Television is the medium used

“Television is the medium used most by Europeans. 87 per cent watch TV content daily either on a
TV set or online," says Mr Brooke. “This enduring popularity is made possible thanks to commercial
channels’ investment in programme content. Our viewers demand the best news, sport, entertainment
and drama. Good quality doesn’t come cheap and 40 per cent of commercial TV revenue is
reinvested in TV content. This investment is rewarded in consumers’ trust. Although information today  is everywhere, television remains the most trusted platform for news in Europe and beyond.”
Regional Information Centre Deputy Director Caroline Petit says

“TV’s power lies in its ability to foster democracy, to encourage freedom of speech, to contribute to
innovation, to mobilise and to support cultural diversity,” Ms Petit said. “By alerting world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security, TV has the potential to help sharpen the understanding of  some major global topics.”

World Urbanism Day - World Town Planning Day - 8 November

“World Town Planning Day, also known as World Urbanism Day, was founded in 1949 by the late Professor Carlos Maria della Paolera.  at the Institut d’urbanisme in Paris

The idea was to promote good planning and highlight the role it plays in creating liveable urban communities and to draw attention to the social, environmental and economic impact from the development of cities and towns.

The United Nations estimates the world reached a total population of 1 billion in 1804. Some 123 years later in 1927, it was at 2 billion. Just 33 years later in 1960 it was 3 billion. It hit 4 billion 14 years later in 1974. By 1987 it had reached 5 billion. Then 6 billion in 1999. And now 7 billion.”

Universal Children's Day - 20 November

Children's Day is recognized on various days in many places around the world, to honor children globally. It was first proclaimed by the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in 1925 and then established universally in 1954 to protect an "appropriate" day. Major global variants include a Universal Children's Day on April 30, by United Nations recommendation.

Children's Day is often celebrated on other days as well. International Day for Protection of Children, observed in many countries as Children's Day on June 1 since 1950, was established by the Women's International Democratic Federation on its congress in Moscow (22 November 1949).

Universal Children's Day takes place annually on November 20. First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, it was established to encourage all countries to institute a day, firstly to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and secondly to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world's children.
This day is observed to promote the objectives outlined in the Charter and for the welfare of children. On November 20, 1959 the United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. The United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989.

By resolution 836(IX) of 14 December 1954, the General Assembly recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children's Day, to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children. It recommended that the Day was to be observed also as a day of activity devoted to promoting the ideals and objectives of the Charter and the welfare of the children of the world. The Assembly suggested to governments that the Day be observed on the date and in the way which each considers appropriate. The date 20 November, marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989.
