International Museum Day - 18 May

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society.

In 2012, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with almost 32,000 museums hosting events in more than 129 countries.

The worldwide community of museums will celebrate the 2013 International Museum Day on 18 May, 2013 with the theme Museums (memory + creativity) = social change

2014
Theme: Museum Collections make Connections

The museum is an institution that preserves and communicates the past, yet it is grounded in the present. In its very essence, it is a link between the generations, as it allows present and future generations to better comprehend their origins and history. This theme also emphasizes the collaborations between museums worldwide and their importance for cultural exchanges and the knowledge of the world’s cultures.
