Srinivasa Ramanujan - Biography

Srinivasa Ramanujan (22 December 1887 – 26 April 1920) was a mathematician, who made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.

Ramanujan independently compiled nearly 3900 results (mostly identities and equations).

Ramanujan went to Cambridge in 1914. Hardy, his collaborator at Cambridge said Ramanujan could have become an outstanding mathematician if his skills had been recognized earlier. It was said about his talents of continued fractions and hypergeometric series that, “he was unquestionably one of the great masters.” It was due to his sharp memory, calculative mind, patience and insight that he was a great formalist of his days.

G.H. Hardy spoke on some of Ramanujan’s (as yet unpublished) research at the London Mathematical Society at the monthly meeting on 11 June 1914. June 11 is a landmark date for modern Indian mathematics.

He got elected as the fellow in 1918 at the Trinity College at Cambridge and the Royal Society. He departed from this world on April 26, 1920.

In 1918, Hardy and Ramanujan studied the partition function P(n) extensively and gave a non-convergent asymptotic series that permits exact computation of the number of partitions of an integer. Hans Rademacher, in 1937, was able to refine their formula to find an exact convergent series solution to this problem. Ramanujan and Hardy's work in this area gave rise to a powerful new method for finding asymptotic formulae, called the circle method.

He discovered mock theta functions in the last year of his life. For many years these functions were a mystery, but they are now known to be the holomorphic parts of harmonic weak Maass forms.

The Ramanujan conjecture

Ramanujam has many conjectures to his credit

One conjecture has connection with conjectures of André Weil in algebraic geometry that opened up new areas of research. Ramanujan conjecture is an assertion on the size of the tau-function, which has as generating function the discriminant modular form Δ(q), a typical cusp form in the theory of modular forms. It was finally proven in 1973, as a consequence of Pierre Deligne's proof of the Weil conjectures. The reduction step involved is complicated. Deligne won a Fields Medal in 1978 for his work on Weil conjectures.

Hardy-Ramanujan number 1729

The number 1729 is known as the Hardy–Ramanujan number after a famous anecdote of the British mathematician G. H. Hardy In Hardy's words:
The two different ways are
1729 = 13 + 123 = 93 + 103.

26 November - World Anti-Obesity Day

World Anti-Obesity Day (AOD) is observed in various parts of the world on November 26, with several healthcare organizations  in India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries participating in it.

In 2001, the Indian Wellness brand VLCC, founded by Mrs. Vandana Luthra, took the first step towards creating the celebration of the day to create awareness about  ill-effects of Obesity and ways to prevent it or reduce the overweight through weight reduction programmes.

Stand Up at least Three Hours a Day

Stand Up India, is a public awareness campaign that seeks to make people aware of the dangers of prolonged sitting, urging them to be more active. People who sit for 6-7 hours every day are at an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and shorter life spans as well as becoming overweight.  A report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in January 2015 finds that long hours of sitting increases an individuals risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Standing for at least one-fourth of the day decreases this risk, observes a research by the American Cancer Society in collaboration with The Cooper Institute, the University of Texas and the University of Georgia. Standing for an hour can help burn approximately 50 extra kilo calories. So by standing for two hours a day (extra 100 calories burn) for a year one can lose more than 36,500 calories (that is walking at least 15 to 186 marathons), or nearly five kgs.

Vandana Luthra made the appeal: "I urge you to stand up for your health. Log on to www.orangepledge.com and take the Orange Pledge if you agree to stand up against obesity.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty - 17 October

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed every year since 1993, when the United Nations General Assembly, by resolution 47/196, designated this day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries. Poverty eradication remains at the core of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the development of the new Sustainable Development Goals.

http://www.un.org/en/events/povertyday/

2017

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the declaration by the General Assembly, in its resolution 47/196 of 22 December 1992, of 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Call to Action by Father Joseph Wresinski — which inspired the observance of October 17 as the World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty — and the recognition by the United Nations of the day as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

2017 theme — Answering the Call of October 17 to end poverty: A path toward peaceful and inclusive societies

The Call to Action recognizes the need for building an alliance with citizens from all backgrounds to end poverty.

Build an alliance with citizens from all backgrounds to end poverty.

2015 Theme:
Building a sustainable future: Coming together to end poverty and discrimination

The 2015 observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is a special one, as it comes on the heels of the adoption of Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Agenda, which succeeds the Millennium Development Goals, contains 17 new and ambitious goals – foremost among them, to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere".

Goal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere
1.1 By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day

1.2 By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions
1.3 Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable
1.4 By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance
1.5 By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters
1.a Ensure significant mobilization of resources from a variety of sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, in order to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries, to implement programmes and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions
1.b Create sound policy frameworks at the national, regional and international levels, based on pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies, to support accelerated investment in poverty eradication actions

About the Day

World Humanitarian Day falls on 19 August, the day in 2003 when 22 aid workers were killed in a bombing at the UN headquarters in Baghdad. It's a day to commemorate all people who have lost their lives in humanitarian service and to celebrate the spirit of people helping people that motivates this work. 2013 Theme: The World Needs More…

World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognize those who face danger and adversity in order to help others. The day was designated by the General Assembly to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.

19 August, 2013 marks 10 years since that tragic event, which claimed 22 lives. This year, the international community will pause to remember those who died, as well as the dozens of aid workers, who have died in the years since.

But World Humanitarian Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe.

This year the UN and its humanitarian partners are launching a ground-breaking campaign called The world needs more… This is a first-of-its-kind project that will quite literally turn words into aid.

15 July - World Youth Skills Day

Learn and Practice - Succeed and Be The Best at Whatever You Want to Do or Are Doing?
http://nraoblogs.blogspot.com/2017/07/how-to-succeed-and-be-best-at-whatever.html

Learning by every person is fundamental in Hindu Philosophy.

Hindu Philosophy which is Vedic Philosophy says Dharma - Artha - Kama - Moksha are the four important attainments for a human being.

Dharma - One meaning is ability to do things. Other meaning is the code of conduct decided by the society through the sayings of saints.
Artha - Using the ability in meaningful way to earn income or produce things valuable
Kama - Using the things produced to take care of oneself.
Moksha - God's grace or favorable judgment which comes from taking care of others and their needs with things you produced.

A person who does not have a skill has wasted his life. It is life without meaning (artha)

The father is the first guru according to Hindu tradition. He trains his family members in professional pursuits. He gives the skill training. Family has responsibility to train their family members.

Society has responsibility. Society used to feed learners in the olden days of India.

Youth skills development became a global agenda in 2014, when the UN General Assembly declared July 15th the World Youth Skills Day.

Recognizing that fostering the acquisition of skills by youth would enhance their ability to make informed choices with regard to life and work and empower them to gain access to changing labour markets,
1. Decides to designate 15 July as World Youth Skills Day;
2. Invites all Member States, the organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, including youth-led organizations, to commemorate World Youth Skills Day in an appropriate manner, in accordance with national priorities, including through education, campaigns, volunteering and public awareness-raising activities;

PM awards young innovators in the Indian Army, on the occasion of Army Day

In a unique initiative aimed at recognizing and awarding innovation among youth, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today presented Certificates of Excellence to eight young innovative officers of the Indian Army. The certificates were presented to the officers for unique innovations done by these officers, in areas such as reconnaissance, monitoring and greater facilitation for soldiers in combat conditions.

The certificates were presented by the Prime Minister, to these innovators during the "at-home function" at the residence of the Chief of Army Staff, on the occasion of Army Day. The Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar was also present.

The innovators also explained their work to the Prime Minister, through working models and exhibits, in the presence of the Chief of Army Staff.

This is the first time that such efforts on the part of Army officers have been recognized at this highest level.

While presenting the DRDO awards in August 2014, the Prime Minister had called for involving youth in defence research related activities in a big way, to ensure that India remained abreast of global technological advancements in the field. The Prime Minister had also encouraged DRDO to connect with the ultimate end-user of its products – the soldier. He had said the soldier can suggest many practical innovations in defence technology.

Prime Minister has also observed that occasions like the Annual Day of the three Services (Air Force Day, Army Day and Navy Day) should be occasions not merely to celebrate the service of our Armed Forces in the defence and security of our nation, but also to organize events to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Armed Forces. Such events could include recognition of members of the Services who have made innovative contributions in areas like defence management, estate management, environment, finance and expenditure, design of defence equipment, papers on defence strategies etc.
