On December 12, 1963, at midnight to be exact, Kenyans assembled in large numbers  on the grounds of the Uhuru Gardens to witness change of power from British to Kenyan government.

The Union Jack was finally lowered for the last time at midnight.

People turned to one other in tears, hugs, dance and whoops of joy.
