Various blogs and web sites indicate that the day was first authorised as a celebration in 1935 in USA. I tried to find an authoritative source for it but could not locate it so far (Please give one if you know).

Celebration

In India it became popular during the last 7 or 8 years. Tying a friendship band around the hand is most popular activity on this day. Writing on the hands etc. of friends also is very popular.

It is indeed a great blessing to have true friends. Thinking of friendships, the legendary friendship of Krishna and Arjuna comes to mind. They were both princes from neighboring kingdoms. Arjuna was in love with Krishna's sister but Krishna's father was opposed to the marriage. Krishna advised Arjuna to kidnap his love!

Some or other differences of opinion do keep coming up frequently. But we need to push them aside frequently to wish good of all knol authors. We are on this platform for the good of all and not for spreading displeasure.

Big Business

Valentine’s day – Fathers day – friendship day and the list goes on & on this was really unheard of 10 years ago, celebrating such days is after all “ Western culture” & big business for retailers. Lately I have seen that we too have got up from our slumber & started celebrating Hanuman Jayanti, Gudi Padva, etc, in a bigger way then ever before, we indeed needed such a cultural jolt :)

Sure Sir, I was running the Thane Mayor Marathon -2nd Aug 09. It was one VERY EXHAUSTING event, had to walk for Kms. on end, the summer heat really got to me : )
